Our Lady of the Assumption [
XI secolo ]
Story of the church
The Mother Church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. It has a basilican plan with three naves , divided into a series of pillars which are surmounted by round arches. The structure has undergone a lot of modifications in the years , but the features of the Gothic – Norman style are present . The squared structured bell tower is topped with an octagonal drum .
Thanks to recent digging , sepulchral crypts have been found .
Among the most important works kept in the Church , there are the high altar , coated with polychromatic inlaid marble dated 1798 , the paintings of the right nave, among which there is the Pentecost one , made by John Baptist De Sanctis in 1708.There is also a very interesting wooden statue , probably of the XVII c. , representing Pietà. Also the arch of the apse, supported by two risers of altars , the left one dating back to 1578, is very interesting .
