Diocesan Museum

The diocesan museum was established in 1952 by archbishop Giovanni Rizzo. In the space of two rooms, properly created by restoring the premises of the sacristy of the cathedral, artistic proofs, sacred and liturgical furnishings were collected along with other documentary material of different ages, including the very famous and precious holy text of the Codex Purpureus. In 1977 the museum underwent an important structural intervention, thanks to Archbishop Antonio Cantisani. In 1985-1986 Archbishop Serafino Sprovieri started the restoring of a wing of the Archbishop which had to become a museum.

After years of work, on December 9th 2000, the new seat of the museum was opened by Archbishop Andrea Cassone. A new project of valorization and musealization of the Codex was started in 2010 under the archbishop Santo Marcianò , who has also promoted , by the Unesco see in Rome, the inscription of the Codex Purpureus in the register “Memory of the World”. In 2014 under the current archbishop Giuseppe Satriano, new modernization and valorization of the museum were started. The new diocesan museum of sacred art and of the codex, opened on 3th July , presents a new set-up, divided in two sections: one entirely dedicated to the Codex Purpureus , the other is dedicated to the history of the diocese and of the city of Rossano through the centuries with an exhibition of the most representative masterpieces still preserved. Both paths are enriched by multimedia devices and virtual applications that allow the visitor to deepen his knowledge not only about the Codex but also about the other art- works in the museum A special multimedia browser in the room of the Codex allows visitor to admire , in high definition , all the illuminations kept in the precious manuscript, thus enjoy new details , unnoticed before
