Saint Nilo’s medallion
Description
In a recent study the historian of art Giorgio Leone ( AAVV. , Saint Nilo di Rossano e l’abbazia greca di Grottaferrata, Roma 2009, p. 224), claims that the sculpture is the work of a Neapolitan silversmith of the XVIII c. and that it belonged to the frontal of the high altar of the Cathedral .The existence of the frontal of the altar of Achiropita is attested in the documents of the diocesan Archives of Rossano. The frontal had three little relief sculptures: Saint Nilo together with Saint Bartholomew and Our Lady of Achiropita (“ Study of Achiropita").
